Born and raised here.

Current pursuits in life & powerlifting:

He was a licensed contractor and worked as a floor-covering contractor and owned Unique Physique Fitness Center in Huntsville.

Lifting History:

When did you start weightlifting and what inspired you to start weightlifting?

He started weightlifting in high school for sports. He became so interested, he started using cinder blocks as weights to workout in his backyard.

 

When did you get involved with powerlifting and what got you interested in the sport?

He became interested in powerlifting also while in high school. He began competing while he was in the

U.S. Navy. During the early 1980’s in the navy his powerlifting career skyrocketed. Article after article was published speaking on the 20 year old bluejacket, world-class powerlifter projected to become the world's strongest man in his weight class.

2X4 Borden, due to his routine of breaking 2X4 boards over his head prior to lifting in competitions

What are some of your powerlifting accomplishments?

  • By 1991 he had won one World Championship, three National Championships, and 13 consecutive State Championships.

  • Won at least 50 of the meets he entered.

  • He squated his first 800# and 2000# total in the same meet, the USPF Alabama State Open in 1985.

  • Had his biggest total of 2088.8 at the USPF YMCA National in 1987.

 

Who are some of the most memorable lifters/people for you in your career? 

Bill Kazmaier, Milton Pepper

 

With your name as part of the history of powerlifting in Alabama, what would you like to be most remembered for?

He immensely enjoyed helping others reach their goals. Whether it was in powerlifting, bodybuilding, or weight loss, Doug thrived off seeing others succeed in their ambitions. He encouraged people to never give up on their dreams.

 

What words of wisdom would you like to pass down to future powerlifters?

It goes without question if you met Doug Borden, you would always remember the man with a show- stopping personality, a strong grip, and a faith in God to “give him all the strength he needed to lift" on any given day. He also had a saying, “Look good, feel good, do good!”
