Be a good father and grandfather. Help grow the sport and the HOF as much as I can. Help other lifters on their journey.
Lifting History:
When did you start weightlifting and what inspired you to start weightlifting?
I started at age 14 for football and other sports. I fell in love with it! I lifted through all levels of football.
When did you get involved with powerlifting and what got you interested in the sport?
At around age 22 I met Joe Hood and was amazed at his lifts. Also, seeing the sport on TV at that time. Bill Kazmaier and Doug Young were awesome!
Do you have a powerlifting nick name, if so what is it and how did you get it?
“Master Monster” LOL! I was BIG… a monster, and old during most of my career! Master’s classes.

Who are some of the most memorable lifters/people for you in your career?
Joe Hood, introduced me to powerlifting.
Ernie Frantz, my original hero in the sport.
Doug Young because of his heroic performance at the 1977 IPF World’s. While breaking his ribs squating he still won!
Danny Harbison, my original training partner.
With your name as part of the history of powerlifting in Alabama, what would you like to be most remembered for?
Giving every ounce I had every meet and every lift. Giving back to the sport and the lifters. Still having the 3rd biggest biggest single ply squat over 55 y.o. 13 years later.
What words of wisdom would you like to pass down to future powerlifters?
This is always true, weight follows FORM, never the other way around!
What are some of your contributions to sport of powerlifting in Alabama?
APF Alabama chairman, WPC World Judge, Meet director for the APF Alabama State Meet. Held the state meet for 8 years until I was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had to have it removed. A “Rockin” announcer for several meets over the years for multiple federations. A spot/loader at several meets when I was younger. Owned the gym Monster Barbell and coached many lifters who became state, national and world champions.
Other Items:
In 2008, performed set of 8 reps 2454lbs. on the leg press. One of my favorite strength accomplishments.
I’ve enjoyed a well rounded life. I played football, baseball and track & field. I’ve been a recording artist with a charting recording and song writer.
