What is your Alabama Connection? Born and lived all but 5 years in Alabama
Current pursuits:
I am now retired from competition due to injuries. Now I spend time with my family, my church, and I'm a rare book collector.
Lifting History:
When did you start weightlifting and what inspired you to start weightlifting?
I started lifting in the late 70's just to obtain a better fitness level.
When did you get involved with powerlifting and what got you interested in the sport?
I got involved in powerlifting in early 1980's. A man from another state was working out at the gym and told me that I was strong for my age and I should do a powerlifting meet. I started training for a meet and that resulted in my attending my first powerlifting meet.
What weight class(es) did you compete in? 181, 198 & 220
What are your best lifts in each category in each weight class?

How many years did you compete? 24 years
Between what year and what year did you compete? 1984 – 2007
What is the approximate total number of meets you competed in? 111
List your favorite meets you competed in.
One of my favorites was a meet in 1995 at The Naval Air Station in Meridian, Ms. They did it outside with about 20 Harley motorcycles near the stage. As you approached the stage the Harley's revved up. It was my first 600 deadlift. One other meet is special which was in 1998. A young lifter by the name of Tony Caprari (HOF member) was just getting started. I had a 600 dead at 198 class. I Finished second to Tony in best lifter category. Gus Rethwisch was there and introduced Tony and I together.
What’s the highest classification you achieved? I did an ADFPA Elite total, and in the USPF in Montgomery, AL, I did International Elite Class with a 1490 total.
What’s the highest score you achieved? I think my best coefficient was at an AAPF hosted by Buddy McKee. In the 220 60-64 I had a 539.5 and was one of the master best lifters with a 1510 total.
What are some of your powerlifting accomplishments?
I was best lifter at 15 meets including one in the WABDL at Worlds. I had two senate resolutions passed regarding powerlifting. I was inducted into the Fayette County Hall of Fame. I was a Geezerjock of the year finalist by Geezerjock Magazine (national masters magazine) in the 60-69 year group. I set Alabama, regional, National, and World records to numerous to mention. I was the Alabama Powerlifting Hall of Fame Board Chairman for 2 years.
Who are some of the most memorable lifters/people for you in your career?
I met so many great people in powerlifting all over the United States and in Alabama. Many of those in Alabama are in the HOF.
With your name as part of the history of powerlifting in Alabama, what would you like to be most remembered for?
I always want to be remembered as a lifter giving advice and I am always available. I still assist young lifters today.
What words of wisdom would you like to pass down to future powerlifters?
I always tell them to learn proper technique from someone who knows what proper technique is.
What are some of your contributions to the sport of powerlifting in Alabama?
I was a meet director at 9 meets in Fayette, AL hosting a couple of ADFPA state meets. One of which was one of the largest ever with 112 entries and 97 that competed in the meet. I am a NASA National Judge, and a WABDL World Judge. I have officiated at more than 30 meets.
