Lifting History:

When did you start weightlifting and what inspired you to start weightlifting?

1976 – lifted for sports in high school.

 

When did you get involved with powerlifting and what got you interested in the sport?

1979 – Got into powerlifting at Auburn University. I still have the book “Inside Powerlifting” By Dr. Terry Todd.

Who are some of the most memorable lifters/people for you in your career?

Billy Keel – I followed him as USAPL State Chairman from 2017-2023.

Fred Rice – Used to train deadlift in his garage for years and talked a lot about powerlifting history.

Doug Currance – Competed against him multiple times and became great friends.

Clint Gallo – Trained under him at Encore Sports Decatur/Hartselle Alabama.

Brant Bishop – Always enjoyed lifting in his meets and became good friends.

With your name as part of the history of powerlifting in Alabama, what would you like to be most remembered for?

Alabama Powerlifting Hall of Fame Inductee and Board Member.

Bench Pressing over 400 pounds in competition 76 times all in master division.

Deadlifting over 500 pounds in competition 84 times all in master division.

Number 1 ranked USAPL Alabama Master lifter from 2008-2016.

What words of wisdom would you like to pass down to future powerlifters?

Hook up with someone who has competed regularly and start slow.

Learn the rules and technique before lifting heavy.

What are some of your contributions to sport of powerlifting in Alabama? 

State Chair, Meet Director and pertinent meets, Judge & level & Feds, ways you contributed to other meets (announcer, score table, spot/loader, expediter)

I was the USAPL Alabama State Chairman from 2017-2023, Co-Chairman before that.

I was the USAPL Alabama State Records Chairman from 2007-2019

I was a USAPL State Certified Referee and served from 2011-2023.

I have coached numerous lifters who competed.

At meets, I always look for first time lifters and try to help them as much as possible.
