When did you get involved with powerlifting and what got you interested in the sport?
I began my powerlifting journey in 1974 in my senior year at Florence State University, now known as University of North Alabama. After I graduated in 1974 from college I was hired at Butler High School in Huntsville. Butler was the largest high school in the state at that time. I was I hired as an assistant football coach and strength coach. I got my job originally because I had played college football and worked with weights. John Meadows was the head coach at Butler. He wanted a strength coach because Bear Bryant had one at Alabama. Anything Bear Bryant did, Coach Meadows wanted to do.

I believe I became the first dedicated high school strength and conditioning coach ever in the state of Alabama.
