Born: 02/04/1952
Hometown: Grove Hill, Alabama
Current Residence: Savannah, Georgia
Alabama Connection: I lived in Alabama from 1968 through 1990.
Current Pursuits:
I am a retired lawyer living in Savannah. I still train as a powerlifter and sometime harbor delusions of competing again at some point. I referee powerlifting regularly.
Contributing History:
When did you get involved with powerlifting and what got you interested in the sport?
My first exposure to powerlifters was in 1971 as a University of Alabama freshman. Several notable powerlifters then trained at the student weight room. My first meet was a small unsanctioned 1973 contest in Tuscaloosa. I entered the Alabama State Championships in 1974, and each year following until the mid-1980s.
Do you have a powerlifting nickname, and if so what is it and how did you get it?
The only nickname I can recall comes from the gym where I trained in Atlanta. I don’t know how it started but a number of those who trained with me began calling me “Coach.” Maybe I was able to give pointers to novice lifters.
How many years did you contribute?
So far, 52 and counting.

Who are some of the most memorable people/lifters for you in your career? (who & why)
Several notable powerlifters then trained at the student weight room, including Robert Humphrey, Mike Armstrong, Frank Watts, Don Oswald, and Al Craig. I quickly became an eager wanna-be, and those guys were very patient and helpful.
With your name as part of the history of powerlifting in Alabama, what would like to be most remembered for?
Maybe my contributions off-platform can overshadow my mediocre performances as a lifter.
What words of wisdom would you like to pass down to future powerlifters?
Whatever your level as a lifter, go to the gym with the goal of leaving every workout better off than before you got there.
